Volunteering

Volunteers Always Welcome

VolunteersThe museum welcomes new volunteers to help man the museum and keep it running from March to November. As our income comes only from donations, we rely on volunteers to keep the museum operational and there are two areas in which we need help:-

Front of House

Our long serving and loyal team of volunteer Watchkeepers man the desk in the museum and look after the ‘front of house’ part of the museum.

No experience is necessary to become a Watchkeeper. A warm smile, an interest in Oban, reliability and a friendly attitude are the most important requirements. Adult volunteers of all ages are welcome and there is no requirement to have any association with the armed forces – the museum covers Oban in peacetime as well as the war years.

You will get the chance to meet and talk with some of the 30,000 plus visitors from the UK and around the world who call in to the museum during the year. Duties include noting visitor numbers, talking to the visitors and giving them any help they need, operating a simple till and taking money for the sale of small items such as postcards, books etc.

Watchkeeping shifts are for two hours with two people on each watch, seven days a week.

March, April, November:
10 – 12; 12 – 2; 2 - 4
May, June, July, August, September, October:
Monday to Saturday - 10am to 12am, 12am to 2pm, 2pm to 4pm, 4pm to 6pm, Sunday – 10am to 1pm, 1pm to 4pm
Mid June, July, August, Mid September:
7pm to 9pm (Tues, Weds, Thurs only)

If you are interested in becoming a Watchkeeper at one of Oban’s main tourist attractions why not come and visit us on Corran Esplanade, next to the Regent Hotel and talk to the Watchkeepers on duty - or contact us to arrange a trial 2 hour watch to see if you would like to join us.

Behind the Scenes

A great deal of work goes on behind the scenes and we are always on the lookout for volunteers with skills that could help in areas such as administration; preservation and documentation; marketing & promotion;  graphic design/display; fundraising/event organisation; DIY/maintenance/housekeeping skills. If you think you may be able to assist us and can give up a few hours each month, possibly working from your home, please get in touch.
